You must approach it deliberately.

You brace your body.

Then you drive against the ground and attempt to lift something that does not want to move.

This is why the deadlift has become one of the defining exercises of strength training. It tests more than one isolated muscle. It demands that numerous muscles work together while the lifter maintains control under a heavy external load.

The reality is more complicated—and far more useful.

Deadlifts may produce a temporary hormonal response under certain conditions, but they are not a magic switch that permanently raises testosterone. Their real power is their ability to develop strength, muscle, discipline and physical capability.

Do not deadlift merely to chase a temporary hormone spike.

Deadlift to build the stronger man behind the hormone reading.

What Muscles Does the Deadlift Train?

The exact muscular demands depend on the deadlift variation, the lifter’s technique, limb proportions, stance, grip and load.

However, deadlifts generally require substantial involvement from the:

  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Spinal erectors
  • Quadriceps
  • Upper back
  • Trapezius muscles
  • Abdominal and core musculature
  • Forearms
  • Grip muscles

A systematic review of electromyographic research found that deadlift variations produce different activation patterns, meaning no single version is automatically best for every muscle or every lifter. The broader lesson is that the movement recruits multiple major muscle groups as part of a coordinated full-body action.

The legs help generate force against the floor.

The hips extend as the bar rises.

The back musculature helps maintain the position of the torso.

The core resists unwanted movement.

The upper back helps keep the bar controlled and close.

The hands must remain attached to the load.

This is not a movement that allows the rest of the body to remain passive.

The deadlift demands cooperation.

Do Deadlifts Increase Testosterone?

They can produce a temporary increase in testosterone under some training conditions.

However, the idea that every heavy deadlift workout creates a dramatic or permanent testosterone boost is an exaggeration.

To understand the truth, a man must distinguish between two different measurements.

Acute testosterone

Acute testosterone refers to a temporary change measured during or shortly after exercise.

Resistance-training sessions can increase circulating testosterone for a limited period, particularly when the workout involves substantial muscle mass, sufficient volume, moderate-to-heavy resistance and relatively short rest periods. The size of the response can also differ according to age, sex, training experience and the exact structure of the session.

These increases are temporary.

In some studies, testosterone returns towards its previous level shortly after the exercise session ends.

An acute rise does not mean a man’s normal testosterone level has permanently increased.

Resting testosterone

Resting testosterone refers to a man’s usual hormone level outside the immediate period surrounding exercise.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials found that exercise training had a negligible overall effect on resting total testosterone in insufficiently active but otherwise apparently healthy men with normal gonadal function. The result was not significantly altered by training mode, age or body-mass status.

This does not mean exercise is useless.

It means that a man can become stronger, build muscle, improve his health and transform his physical capabilities without producing a dramatic increase in his resting testosterone measurement.

That is an important distinction.

Extremely Heavy Does Not Guarantee a Testosterone Surge

Some men assume that the heavier the deadlift, the greater the hormonal response.

Research does not support such a simple rule.

In one study, ten resistance-trained men completed eight sets of two repetitions at 95% of their one-repetition maximum using either squats or deadlifts. Despite the extremely heavy loads, the researchers found no significant testosterone or cortisol response following either exercise.

That finding does not prove that deadlifts never affect testosterone.

It shows that merely putting an extremely heavy bar on the floor does not guarantee a dramatic hormonal surge.

Hormonal responses depend on the complete session:

  • The amount of muscle involved
  • The number of sets
  • The number of repetitions
  • The resistance used
  • Rest periods
  • Training experience
  • Exercise order
  • Energy availability
  • Age
  • Individual physiology

A low-volume workout involving near-maximum repetitions may produce a different hormonal response from a higher-volume session using moderately heavy resistance.

The alpha man understands nuance.

He does not replace one fitness myth with another.

Temporary Testosterone Is Not the Main Cause of Muscle Growth

For years, post-workout increases in testosterone, growth hormone and other hormones were often presented as the primary explanation for muscle growth.

The modern picture is more complex.

A brief increase in circulating testosterone after a workout is not required for a man to gain strength or muscle. Research comparing free-weight and machine training, for example, found different acute free-testosterone responses in men while both training approaches produced similar improvements in muscle mass and strength.

Muscle growth is driven by the repeated interaction of:

  • Mechanical tension
  • Adequate training volume
  • Progressive overload
  • Sufficient recovery
  • Protein intake
  • Energy availability
  • Individual genetics
  • Long-term consistency

The temporary hormonal environment may be part of the wider physiological response to training, but it should not become the sole measurement by which a workout is judged.

A session was not wasted because it failed to produce a spectacular testosterone spike.

Ask better questions:

  • Did I train the intended muscles effectively?
  • Did I maintain sound technique?
  • Did I create an appropriate stimulus?
  • Am I recovering?
  • Am I progressing over time?
  • Can I repeat this programme consistently?

Those questions build strong bodies.

The Real Relationship Between Deadlifts and Testosterone

Deadlifts are valuable not because they permanently force testosterone upwards, but because they can form part of a lifestyle that supports male health.

A well-designed resistance-training programme can help a man:

  • Build and preserve muscle
  • Increase muscular strength
  • Improve physical function
  • Support healthier glucose control
  • Increase physical capacity
  • Maintain independence as he ages
  • Improve body composition when combined with appropriate nutrition

Resistance training has demonstrated broad benefits for strength, hypertrophy, power and physical performance. Updated guidance from the American College of Sports Medicine emphasises that regular participation and adherence matter more for most adults than complicated programming or advanced techniques.

Resistance training has also been associated with improvements in glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.

These benefits can improve the overall biological environment in which hormones operate.

A stronger, more active man with better metabolic health may be in a better position to maintain normal hormonal function than a sedentary man with declining muscle mass and poor metabolic health.

But deadlifts should not be presented as a direct medical treatment for low testosterone.

They support the system.

They do not override every disease, deficiency, medication effect or endocrine disorder.

Strength Is More Than a Hormone Reading

The obsession with testosterone can cause men to overlook the real evidence of progress.

A man may increase his deadlift from 80 kilograms to 140 kilograms.

He may add muscle to his back, legs and hips.

His grip may become stronger.

His posture under load may improve.

His waist measurement may decrease.

His confidence may rise.

He may become more capable in everyday life.

None of those achievements becomes meaningless because his resting testosterone remains within the same normal range.

The objective of training is not simply to manipulate a laboratory number.

It is to become more capable.

Judge your progress by asking:

  • Am I stronger than I was six months ago?
  • Is my technique more controlled?
  • Am I building or preserving muscle?
  • Is my body composition improving?
  • Can I perform more work without breaking down?
  • Am I recovering between sessions?
  • Am I maintaining consistency?
  • Is my training improving my life outside the gym?

Testosterone matters.

But masculinity cannot be reduced to one blood-test result.

The Deadlift Builds an Honest Mindset

The deadlift provides immediate feedback.

Either the bar moves or it does not.

Either your position remains controlled or it breaks down.

Either you respected your preparation or the weight exposes the weakness in it.

This is what makes the deadlift mentally valuable.

It can teach a man several principles.

Preparation comes before performance

A successful pull begins before the bar leaves the ground.

Foot position, grip, breathing, bracing and tension must be established first.

The same principle applies outside the gym.

Men often want the result without respecting the preparation required to produce it.

Commitment matters

A hesitant pull is usually an unsuccessful pull.

Once the lifter has established a sound position, he must apply force with intent.

This does not mean becoming reckless. It means replacing uncertainty with controlled commitment.

Progress cannot be rushed

A man cannot force his body to adapt simply because he wants the result immediately.

Tendons, muscles, technique and work capacity require time.

The ego may want another 20 kilograms today.

The intelligent man asks what will make him stronger next year.

The weight exposes dishonesty

You cannot persuade a loaded bar that you trained harder than you did.

You cannot talk your way through weak preparation.

The bar measures capability without flattery.

That honesty can become a teacher.

Which Deadlift Variation Is Best?

There is no universally superior deadlift for every man.

The right variation depends on anatomy, mobility, training goals, experience, comfort, equipment and injury history.

Conventional deadlift

The conventional deadlift normally uses a relatively narrow stance with the hands outside the legs.

It is the classic barbell pull from the floor and places substantial demands on the hips, back and posterior chain.

Sumo deadlift

The sumo deadlift uses a wider stance with the hands positioned inside the legs.

It usually allows a more upright torso and changes the demands placed on the hips, knees and surrounding musculature.

Some men find it more comfortable because of their proportions or mobility. Others perform better conventionally.

Trap-bar deadlift

The trap-bar deadlift places the lifter inside a hexagonal bar.

This changes the position of the load relative to the body and often permits a more upright torso. Research comparing straight-bar and hexagonal-bar deadlifts has found differences in muscle activation and power characteristics, supporting the idea that each version can serve different goals.

For some beginners, athletes or men who find straight-bar deadlifting uncomfortable, the trap bar may be a useful option.

Romanian deadlift

The Romanian deadlift generally begins from a standing position.

The lifter pushes the hips backwards while maintaining control of the load, creating substantial tension through the hamstrings and glutes.

It is primarily a hip-hinge movement and does not require each repetition to begin from a complete stop on the floor.

Block or rack pull

The bar begins from an elevated position.

This reduces the required range of motion and may allow a lifter to emphasise particular portions of the movement.

It can be used strategically, but it should not automatically replace learning to move well through an appropriate full range.

The strongest variation is the one you can perform safely, progress consistently and align with your objective.

How Heavy Should the Alpha Man Deadlift?

Heavy enough to create progress.

Light enough to preserve control.

The answer will differ for a beginner and an experienced strength athlete.

The American College of Sports Medicine’s 2026 guidance notes that strength can be developed with heavier loads and that programmes should be individualised according to goals, safety and adherence. Its general strength guidance highlights loads around 80% of one-repetition maximum for two to three sets, while also making clear that many approaches can produce results.

A practical strength-focused deadlift session might include:

  • Two to four working sets
  • Three to six repetitions per set
  • A challenging but technically manageable resistance
  • Two to four minutes of rest between demanding sets
  • One or two deadlift-focused sessions per week, depending on the complete programme
  • Gradual progression rather than constant maximum attempts

This is an example, not a universal prescription.

Some lifters will benefit from fewer repetitions and heavier loads.

Others need higher-repetition technique work.

Beginners may initially use kettlebells, blocks, a trap bar or very light resistance while learning the hip hinge.

Advanced powerlifters require specialised programming.

The objective is not to prove your strength during every workout.

It is to build strength across hundreds of workouts.

The Alpha Deadlift Technique Standard

POSITION → BRACE → PUSH → LOCK → CONTROL

1. Position

Establish a stable stance.

Keep the bar close enough that it can travel in a controlled path rather than swinging away from the body.

Secure your grip and organise your body before beginning the pull.

Do not rush the setup.

2. Brace

Create tension through the trunk before the bar leaves the floor.

The torso should not begin the lift loose and then attempt to stabilise halfway through the repetition.

Breathe, brace and prepare to transmit force.

3. Push

Think about pushing the floor away as you extend the knees and hips.

Keep the bar controlled and close to the body.

Do not violently jerk the bar from a relaxed position.

Remove the slack, build tension and then apply force.

4. Lock

Finish by standing tall with the hips and knees extended.

Do not exaggerate the finish by leaning backwards and forcing the lower spine into unnecessary extension.

The repetition is complete when you are standing under control.

5. Control

Return the load by initiating a controlled hip hinge and then bending the knees when appropriate.

Do not lose all tension and allow the bar to drag the body towards the floor.

Heavy deadlifting involves meaningful spinal and muscular loading, making appropriate technique, progression and fatigue management important.

A qualified strength coach can help a new lifter learn the movement, especially when there is uncertainty about technique, mobility or exercise selection.

Common Deadlift Mistakes

Pulling with a loose body

A lifter grips the bar and immediately attempts to rip it from the floor.

There is no bracing, no tension and no organised starting position.

Heavy force is then applied through a structure that was not prepared to receive it.

Allowing the bar to move away

The farther the bar travels from the body, the greater the challenge of controlling the load.

Maintaining a close, efficient bar path is generally preferable.

Turning every repetition into a maximum

Training is supposed to build strength.

Testing reveals the strength already present.

A man who constantly tests maximum capacity may spend too little time developing it.

Sacrificing position for another plate

Adding weight is progression only when the man remains capable of controlling it.

When every technical standard disappears, the additional load may be feeding the ego more than the body.

Hyperextending at the top

Leaning far backwards does not make the lift stronger.

Finish tall and controlled.

Stop Turning Every Session Into a Battle

Avoid the trap of constantly:

  • Attempting new maximums
  • Training to complete failure
  • Adding weight despite deteriorating technique
  • Copying advanced lifters
  • Ignoring pain
  • Deadlifting heavily while severely sleep-deprived
  • Treating exhaustion as proof of effectiveness

Updated resistance-training guidance indicates that training to momentary failure and using complicated advanced methods are not necessary for the average healthy adult to make meaningful progress.

The strongest men do not need to prove themselves every day.

They train intelligently enough to become stronger next month.

Recovery Protects Strength and Hormonal Health

Training creates the stimulus.

Recovery allows the body to respond to it.

A productive deadlift programme should be supported by:

  • Adequate sleep
  • Sufficient protein
  • Enough total energy
  • Appropriate carbohydrate intake
  • Hydration
  • Rest between demanding sessions
  • Management of work and life stress
  • Planned reductions in volume when fatigue accumulates

More work is not always more progress.

A man who continually adds training while reducing sleep and food may eventually experience declining performance, irritability, loss of motivation and poor recovery.

The solution is not necessarily another supplement.

It may be to stop demanding adaptation from a body that has not been given the resources to adapt.

A Simple Deadlift Progression

A beginner might use the following principles:

Stage one: Learn the hinge

Practise pushing the hips backwards while keeping the trunk controlled.

Use a dowel, light kettlebell or unloaded bar.

Stage two: Elevate the load

Beginning with the bar or weights on blocks can make the starting position more accessible.

Stage three: Add manageable resistance

Increase the load only while the movement remains stable and repeatable.

Stage four: Build repetitions

Before adding weight, prove that you can perform the current resistance with consistent technique.

Stage five: Progress gradually

Add a small amount of weight, an additional repetition or a carefully planned set.

Progress does not always require more plates.

Better technique is progress.

Greater control is progress.

More work with the same weight is progress.

Improved recovery is progress.

Deadlifts Cannot Cure Medical Testosterone Deficiency

Heavy training can support health, but it cannot correct every cause of low testosterone.

Clinically low testosterone may be associated with testicular disorders, pituitary or hypothalamic conditions, medication, chronic illness and other medical factors.

Possible symptoms can include:

  • Reduced libido
  • Fewer spontaneous erections
  • Erectile difficulties
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Reduced muscle mass or strength
  • Mood changes
  • Fertility difficulties

These symptoms are not specific to testosterone deficiency and can have many other explanations.

The Endocrine Society recommends diagnosing hypogonadism only when relevant symptoms or signs are accompanied by unequivocally and consistently low testosterone. An unexpectedly low result should be confirmed using a repeat morning fasting measurement, followed by further evaluation to identify the cause.

A man with persistent symptoms should not simply add more deadlifts to his programme and assume the problem will disappear.

Train—but investigate.

Strength and medical responsibility should work together.

Men planning to father children should also understand that externally administered testosterone can suppress sperm production. The Endocrine Society recommends against starting testosterone therapy in men planning fertility in the near term.
